Kansas winters can vary wildly — some are wet and cold, others dry and mild. Either way, your lawn still needs some attention during the off-season.

Watering in Winter

If you have a self-draining sprinkler system, it's very beneficial to water your lawn on days when temperatures are above freezing. Fescue grass is semi-dormant in winter and it's good for it to receive some moisture, especially during dry winters. A dry winter followed by a dry spring can put real stress on your lawn before the growing season even starts.

Early Crabgrass Preventer

Do not be surprised to see us applying the first application sometime in January or February. There isn't any negative to spreading the first application early. We often have nice weather windows in January, and if we wait for February, the weather through April can be uncooperative, causing us to get off to a late start.

Planning for Overseeding

If you have an area that you would like overseeded, please let us know before we spread the first application. Crabgrass preventer will stop and prevent all grass seed germination, so any seed that is put down after application won't come up. Fall is the best time for overseeding, but if spring is your only option, we need to plan around it.

What We Do in the Off-Season

The off-season isn't really an off-season for us. There's equipment maintenance that gets pushed to winter, planning for the upcoming season's programs, and Terrill's cattle operation takes more work in the winter months as well.
