Flint Hills native grass country — and we know it like the back of our hand
Marion sits about 75 minutes east of Burrton, deep in the Flint Hills of Marion County. Between Marion Reservoir, the Cottonwood River valley, and miles of tallgrass prairie, this is some of the most beautiful country in Kansas. We bring professional lawn care and native grass expertise to Marion — from in-town yards to the acreages and ranches that define this landscape.
Marion County is classic Flint Hills. The soils here are thin, rocky, and underlain by limestone and chert — the flinty rock that gives the region its name. In town, yards often have a few inches of topsoil over rocky subsoil that restricts root depth and drains unevenly. These shallow soils heat up fast in summer and don't hold moisture well, which stresses turf grasses and creates bare spots that weeds are happy to colonize.
The thin, alkaline soils around Marion also lock up key nutrients. Iron chlorosis — that yellowing you see in grass even after fertilizing — is common here because the high pH prevents plants from absorbing iron. Our program uses Solu-Cal to address pH at the root zone and Mycorrhizae to extend the root network into soil that grass alone can't access. It's a fundamentally different approach from what you'd get from a bag of 10-10-10 at the hardware store.
And then there's the wind. Marion sits on exposed Flint Hills terrain with nothing between you and the Oklahoma border but grass and sky. That constant wind desiccates turf, especially during the transition from spring to summer when warm-season grasses are waking up and cool-season grasses are starting to stress. Proper timing of fertilizer applications makes a measurable difference in how your lawn handles that transition.
Our Services in Marion
Fertilizing & Spraying
Our proven fertilizer and weed control program works through the full season — pre-emergent in early spring, broadleaf weed control, pH-correcting Solu-Cal, Mycorrhizae to build deeper root systems, grub prevention, and fall winterizer. We spray the lawn once, then spot-spray after that. Fewer chemicals, better results.
Lawn Replacement
With Marion's shallow, rocky soils, establishing a thick lawn requires more than just throwing down seed. We grade and prepare the soil surface, bring in topsoil where needed to give roots room to grow, and select grass varieties that can handle the Flint Hills' tough conditions. Whether your yard has thinned out over the years or you're starting fresh on a new property near Marion Reservoir, we build lawns that last in this landscape.
Native Grass Seeding
This is the heart of tallgrass prairie country, and native grass seeding is one of our specialties. Marion County is surrounded by thousands of acres of native Flint Hills grassland — big bluestem, little bluestem, Indiangrass, switchgrass, and dozens of native forbs that have thrived here for millennia. We restore pastures, seed CRP ground, establish wildlife habitat, and convert old cropland back to native prairie. We've done native seeding work at places like Flint Hills National Golf Club, and we bring that same expertise to Marion County landowners. If you own acreage in the Flint Hills, native grass isn't just an option — it's what the land was built for.
Your Soil Is the Whole Game
Here's something I tell people all the time — if we only spread fertilizer, we're doing nothing to improve your soil. Fertilizer is only feeding the grass. That's it. The soil underneath is still the same compacted, nutrient-locked mess it was before.
That's why we spray a product called Sanctuary that contains Mycorrhizae — beneficial bacteria that feeds the microbial activity in your soil. The more microbes, the healthier your soil, and the healthier your grass. We can't tell you enough of the benefits. These microbes break down organic matter, improve soil structure, and help roots access nutrients and water that they can't reach on their own. It's not flashy. You won't see results overnight. But over a season or two, the difference is obvious.
We also use Solu-Cal to bring down that high pH that's so common around Marion. When pH is too high, nutrients like iron get locked in the soil and the grass can't use them. That's why lawns turn yellow even after you fertilize. Solu-Cal fixes the chemistry so the nutrients actually get where they need to go. Building healthy soil is the foundation of everything we do.
