From your front yard to the back forty — we handle both
Moundridge is an agricultural community, and many properties here include both a lawn and pastureland. Windy Ridge understands that because we come from the same kind of place. We're about 22 minutes away in Burrton, and we offer everything from residential weed control to native grass seeding on larger acreages. Call us — we speak your language.
Moundridge sits in McPherson County on some of the deepest, richest topsoil in Kansas. That's great for wheat and milo — but it creates unique challenges for lawns. The heavy clay content holds moisture in spring, which promotes fungal issues and gives weeds an early foothold. By midsummer, that same clay bakes hard, cracks, and stresses grass roots. It's a cycle that wears lawns down year after year without proper management.
Out here, the wind is constant, and it dries out turf faster than most people realize. Combined with the high pH soils common across McPherson County, lawn grass struggles to pull iron and other micronutrients out of the ground. The result is that yellow-green, thin look that no amount of watering will fix. You have to address the soil chemistry, not just the surface.
We also see a lot of properties in the Moundridge area where the yard transitions into pasture, CRP ground, or just open acreage. Managing that transition — keeping the lawn tight and the acreage productive — takes a provider who understands both sides. That's what we do.
Our Services in Moundridge
Fertilizing & Spraying
Our proven program covers the full growing season. Pre-emergent crabgrass control timed to soil temperature, broadleaf weed treatment, pH correction with Solu-Cal, Mycorrhizae for soil health, premium grub and armyworm prevention, and a winterizer to carry your roots through winter. It's the same program we've refined over 20-plus years across central Kansas.
Lawn Replacement
Sometimes a yard needs a clean slate. Whether you've got a farmstead that's been neglected, a new build on former cropland, or just a lawn that's lost the battle with weeds, we can fix it. We grade the ground, prep the soil, and seed with varieties that handle the heat, wind, and clay that come with living in McPherson County.
Native Grass Seeding
This is where Moundridge-area properties really benefit. If you've got pasture that's gone to weeds, CRP acres that need re-establishment, or open ground you want converted to low-maintenance native grass, we have the equipment and the seed mixes to do it right. Big bluestem, Indiangrass, little bluestem, sideoats grama — these are the grasses that built this part of Kansas. Let us bring them back to your land.
It Starts Under the Surface
Here's what most people don't realize about their lawn — if we only spread fertilizer, we're doing nothing to improve the soil. Fertilizer feeds the grass. That's it. But grass can only be as healthy as the ground it's growing in. So we take it a step further.
We spray a product called Sanctuary that contains Mycorrhizae — beneficial bacteria that feeds the microbial activity in your soil. The more microbes, the healthier your soil, and the healthier the grass growing in it. We can't tell you enough about the benefits. Stronger roots, better water absorption, more natural disease resistance. It's the kind of thing you don't see right away, but after a season you notice your lawn just handles stress better.
We also use Solu-Cal to bring the pH down. The soil out here runs alkaline — often above 7.5 — and at that pH, your grass can't pull iron and other nutrients out of the ground no matter how much fertilizer you throw at it. Fix the pH first, feed the soil biology, then fertilize. That's the order that actually works. Most companies skip the first two steps because they cost more. We don't skip them.
Just 22 Minutes from Moundridge
We're right down the road in Burrton — close enough that Moundridge is one of our regular service areas. Terrill Unruh started Windy Ridge over 20 years ago, and he still personally oversees every property we treat. This is a local operation, not a national franchise with a call center three states away. We know this ground because we live on it, farm on it, and work on it every day. When you need someone who understands rural properties and small-town lawns, give us a call.
