Native grass seeding at Flint Hills National

Native Grass Work at Flint Hills National Golf Club

Flint Hills National is removing approximately 2,000 trees to remedy overcrowding — a significant undertaking that changes the character of parts of the course, opening up sight lines and allowing native grass areas to thrive. We've been reseeding areas where trees have been removed and where drainage work has disturbed the ground. The Flint Hills region of Kansas is one of the last remaining stretches of tallgrass prairie in North America, and we take that heritage seriously.

Deep root fertilizing for soil health

Solu-Cal and Soil pH: Why Your Fertilizer Isn't Working

From taking many soil samples in the area we find that the pH of the soil is often high — we don't think we have ever had one that is too low. The remedy is Solu-Cal, an enhanced gypsum product that helps neutralize pH. If soil pH is too high, your lawn is not able to efficiently use the fertilizer we spread. Some lawns begin to look peaked a few weeks after fertilizing. This is often a sign of pH imbalance rather than a lack of fertilizer. Solu-Cal targets the root of the problem instead of just adding more product.

Defendor is also very effective on clover, which has become increasingly common in Kansas lawns in recent years.

Winter Lawn Care: What Your Lawn Needs in the Off-Season

Kansas winters can vary wildly — some are wet and cold, others dry and mild. Either way, your lawn still needs some attention. If you have a self-draining sprinkler system, it's beneficial to water on days above freezing. Fescue is semi-dormant in winter and benefits from some moisture, especially during dry winters. Don't be surprised to see us applying the first crabgrass preventer in January — there's no downside to getting it on early when weather allows.
